AI Is Reading Your Website Before Any Human Does

Your Website Has a New Visitor, and It's AI

Somewhere in your server right now, something is reading your website that isn't a person. It's not a glitch, and it's not rare. It's become the majority of all traffic hitting websites today, and there's a real chance you've never checked to see what it is or what it's doing there.

What Is an AI Crawler, Exactly

An AI crawler is automated software sent out by companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity to visit websites and read their content, similar to how Google's search bot has worked for decades, except this content doesn't go toward a search results page. It goes toward training AI models or answering questions people ask tools like ChatGPT directly.

The most common ones you'll find in a server log are GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot, alongside newer ones like OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. Each one has a different job, and that difference matters more than most site owners realise.

Is ChatGPT Actually Crawling My Website

Possibly, and there's a good chance it's already happened without you knowing. OpenAI runs three separate systems: GPTBot collects content to train its underlying models, OAI-SearchBot indexes pages specifically for ChatGPT's search feature, and ChatGPT-User fetches a page in real time the moment someone asks ChatGPT a question that references your site directly.

That last one is worth sitting with for a second. It means a real person, right now, might be asking ChatGPT about your business, and ChatGPT is reading your page live to answer them, all without that visit ever showing up as a normal website session in tools like Google Analytics.

Why Most Site Owners Have Never Noticed This

Traditional analytics tools are built to track human visitors. Bot traffic, including AI crawlers, typically doesn't register the same way, so it hides in plain sight unless you go looking for it specifically in your raw server logs. Most small business owners have simply never had a reason to check.

That's changing fast. AI-referred traffic to US retailers grew 393 percent year over year in early 2026, and crawl volume from bots like GPTBot has grown even faster than that behind the scenes. This connects directly to something we've covered before, why your business might not be showing up in ChatGPT often comes down to whether these exact crawlers can even reach and read your site properly in the first place.

Should I Block AI Bots From Crawling My Site

For most small businesses, no, and blocking them can actually hurt you. Research published in late 2025 found that publishers who blocked AI crawlers saw a real drop in overall traffic without reliably reducing how often they were still cited or mentioned inside AI answers. In other words, blocking the bot doesn't remove you from the conversation, it just removes your chance to be the source of it.

The smarter approach most practitioners recommend is selective: allow the crawlers that can cite you in real answers, like OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and ChatGPT-User, while making a deliberate choice about the ones used purely for bulk AI training, like GPTBot or ClaudeBot, if that's a distinction that matters to your business.

How to Check Which AI Bots Are Visiting Your Website

  • Ask your web developer or hosting provider for raw server logs, not just your analytics dashboard, since most AI crawler activity doesn't appear there.
  • Search those logs for known bot names, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User are the ones to look for first.
  • Check your current robots.txt file. Many websites built or last updated before 2023 are unintentionally blocking these bots through outdated security settings, without anyone ever deciding to.
  • Decide deliberately, not by default. Whether to allow or restrict specific bots should be a conscious choice based on your business, not whatever your hosting setup happened to default to years ago.

Bots now generate 57.5 percent of all web traffic, more than humans, for the first time in internet history.

What This Means for Your Website Going Forward

This isn't a future trend to prepare for. It's already the majority of your website's traffic, whether your reports show it or not. A site that was built and optimised purely for Google is now being read, interpreted, and sometimes quoted by an entirely separate audience that doesn't behave like a human visitor at all. Speed and structure matter here too, something we broke down in is your website ready for Google's Core Web Vitals, since slow, poorly structured pages tend to lose out with AI crawlers the same way they lose out with human visitors.

Not sure which AI bots are actually visiting your website, or whether they can even reach your content properly? This is exactly the kind of thing ongoing website development should be catching. Get a free website audit and we'll show you exactly what's happening behind the scenes.
