Your Yelp Listing Might Now Be Answering Questions Inside ChatGPT

Yelp Partnered With OpenAI. Here's Why It Matters.

Someone asks ChatGPT for a good contractor nearby, or a place to eat tonight. Increasingly, the answer they get is built from Yelp reviews, ratings, and photos, not a Google search, not your website, a conversation. If you have a Yelp listing, it may already be shaping how ChatGPT describes your business to people who've never visited your site at all.

What Is the Yelp and OpenAI Partnership

Yelp confirmed a data licensing agreement with OpenAI, giving ChatGPT access to Yelp's reviews, ratings, photos, and business details to power its local recommendations. When someone asks ChatGPT something like "who can fix my furnace this week" or "best sushi near me," it can now pull directly from Yelp's database instead of relying only on its general training knowledge.

The scale here is significant. Yelp is licensing more than 330 million cumulative user reviews and over 8 million business listings. Yelp's own branding and links appear alongside the content when ChatGPT uses it, though OpenAI controls how that experience actually looks. The deal is also non-exclusive, meaning Yelp is free to license the same data to other AI platforms, so this likely won't stay limited to ChatGPT for long.

Does My Business Already Show Up in ChatGPT

Not necessarily, at least not yet, for everyone. A spot check of local search queries in San Francisco in early August found no visible Yelp citations in ChatGPT's answers, while competitors like Angi, Thumbtack, and Tripadvisor did appear as sources. That means the rollout is still uneven and expanding, not fully live everywhere. If your business isn't showing up yet, that doesn't mean the integration failed, it likely means your category or region simply hasn't been reached yet.

Can You Book or Contact a Business Directly in ChatGPT

On August 10, 2026, Yelp extended the partnership further, adding Reservations and Waitlist directly inside ChatGPT. That means someone chatting with ChatGPT about where to eat can now book a table or join a waitlist without ever leaving the conversation, no switching apps, no visiting your website, no phone call.

A separate feature called Request a Quote has also been announced for local service businesses, allowing ChatGPT users to contact providers like plumbers, electricians, or contractors directly for pricing. As of now, this feature has been confirmed but has not fully launched yet, so it's worth watching for rather than acting on immediately.

People aren't just asking ChatGPT for recommendations anymore. They're expecting to complete the whole task without leaving the chat.

How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Businesses to Recommend

OpenAI hasn't published the exact ranking logic it uses when selecting which businesses to surface. What's known is that the underlying data comes from Yelp, so the same signals that matter on Yelp itself, review volume, recency, accuracy of business details, and whether reviews are filtered into Yelp's "not recommended" section, likely carry over into what ChatGPT ends up citing.

Why This Matters Even If You've Never Touched ChatGPT

According to Yelp's own research with Morning Consult, 65 percent of Americans have already used AI tools for search, but only 15 percent say they trust the answers "a lot." That trust gap is exactly why this partnership exists, Yelp is positioning its reviews as the credible, sourced layer underneath ChatGPT's answers, rather than letting the AI guess or hallucinate business details.

For a business owner, this means your Yelp presence is no longer just a passive directory listing sitting quietly on the internet. It's becoming an active input into how an AI assistant describes you, whether you've logged into Yelp recently or not.

How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT Through Yelp

  • Keep your Yelp business information accurate: Hours, services, and categories feed directly into what ChatGPT might tell a potential customer.
  • Build recent review volume, not just historical reviews: Freshness matters more in an AI-summarised world than it used to.
  • Check your "not recommended" review count on Yelp: Reviews sitting in that section may not surface the same way as reviews on your main profile.
  • Respond to reviews, especially recent ones: A business that engages with feedback signals activity and legitimacy, both to human readers and increasingly to AI systems summarising that activity.
  • Don't wait for Request a Quote to launch to fix your basics: By the time it's fully live in your category, businesses with clean, active, well-reviewed profiles will already have the advantage.

What This Means Going Forward

This is part of a bigger shift we've been tracking, the dark funnel of buyer research keeps expanding into places business owners can't directly control or fully see. A Yelp review written two years ago might now be quietly shaping a ChatGPT answer today, long after you've stopped thinking about it.
