Here's something most business owners don't know yet: your Instagram Reels and YouTube videos have probably been showing up in Google Search for years. You just had no way to prove it, track it, or learn from it. That changed this month, and almost nobody has noticed.
The Update Google Barely Announced
Google introduced a new property type in Search Console called platform properties, which lets you monitor how your social media and video posts perform in Google Search and Discover. It currently covers Instagram, X, and YouTube, and here's the part that actually matters: it works even if you've never verified a website with Google at all. Google confirmed the rollout on its own Search Central blog on July 7, 2026.
No website? Doesn't matter. If you're running a business off Instagram and YouTube alone, you now get a real window into how Google treats your content, something that simply didn't exist before.
What Search Console Will Actually Show You
Once connected, you can see exactly which searches are leading people to your posts, how many clicks and views each one is getting, and which posts are your best performers. This is the same data website owners have quietly relied on for years, finally handed to social-first businesses too.
Your YouTube Video Might Be Beating Your Website
It gets more interesting here. You can now compare how your website and your social content perform for the exact same search terms, side by side. The early pattern is telling: businesses with active video content are often finding YouTube pulling in more search clicks than their actual website, especially for how-to and review searches.
Read that again. Your YouTube video might be quietly outperforming your homepage in Google Search, and until now, you had no way to know.
Why This Closes a Real Blind Spot
You've probably had a hunch your posts show up in search sometimes. Maybe someone mentioned finding you that way. Now you don't have to guess. You can open Search Console and see the exact term someone typed before they found you, something that used to be locked away for website content only.
This is the first time content you don't own the domain for can be verified and measured directly inside Search Console.
How to Turn It On Today
Open Search Console, click the property selector top left, and add a new property. Pick the platform property option, then verify whichever account you want to connect. The rollout is still gradual, so if the option isn't there yet, check back over the next few weeks. It's coming.
What This Actually Means for You
If social media genuinely drives your business, this closes a blind spot that's existed since Search Console launched. You're no longer flying blind on whether your content is working in search. Now you can actually see it.
