Google AI Max Explained: Should You Enable It for Your Google Ads Campaigns?

Google AI Max Explained: Should You Enable It for Your Google Ads Campaigns?

If you manage Google Ads, you have probably seen the AI Max prompt sitting in your Search campaign settings. Some accounts already have it switched on without anyone choosing to. That is not an accident. Google is moving every Search campaign toward this feature whether advertisers ask for it or not.

What AI Max actually is

AI Max for Search campaigns is not a new campaign type. It is an optimisation layer you switch on inside an existing Search campaign. It works as a continuous optimisation layer that processes real time signals to refine targeting and creative delivery automatically, aiming for stronger performance with less manual work.

In plain terms, it lets Google expand your keyword matching, generate ad text automatically, and send traffic to whichever page on your site it thinks fits the search, all without you touching the campaign daily.

Why this is happening now

Search behaviour has shifted. People are typing full questions instead of short keywords, and Google is positioning AI Max as the way advertisers keep up. Legacy features like Dynamic Search Ads are being automatically upgraded to AI Max starting in September, and new campaigns using DSA will no longer be possible to create. This is not an optional trial. It is the direction every account is headed.

What you actually get

  • Search term matching. Your ads can show for related queries you never added as keywords.
  • Text customisation. Headlines and descriptions are generated automatically from your site and existing ads.
  • Final URL expansion. Traffic can be sent to a different page on your site than the one you set, if Google decides it fits the query better.
  • Brand and location controls. You still get some say over where and near whom your ads appear, unlike fully automated formats like Performance Max.

AI Max is not full automation. It is Google asking for more control in exchange for a promise of better results.

Should you turn it on

Google's own data shows advertisers who activate AI Max typically see 14 percent more conversions or conversion value at a similar cost per result. That number is worth taking with some caution since it comes from Google, not an independent source, but the direction lines up with what we would expect from broader matching and automated creative.

The real answer depends on what is already true about your account. AI Max will not help a campaign that is limited by budget, so if your daily spend is already capping out, turning this on will not fix that. And if your landing pages are not built to convert whoever lands on them, automated targeting just sends more of the wrong kind of traffic to a page that was already underperforming, something we broke down in why ad strategy matters more than ad budget.

What this actually means for you

AI Max is worth testing if your campaign already has a clear objective, solid landing pages, and enough budget to let it optimise properly. It is not a fix for a weak funnel, and turning it on will not undo a campaign that was never set up to convert in the first place. Since AI Max is not yet available through the Google Ads API or Editor, turning it on or off can affect your existing setup, so it is worth checking with whoever manages your account before flipping the switch.
